Ciena takes another step in integrating Nortel's MEN into its fold

Tools

Ciena (NASDAQ: CIEN) is wasting no time integrating Nortel's Metro Ethernet Network (MEN) assets into its own product line, and the integration of 40G coherent technologies on its CN 4200 RS FlexSelect Platform is evidence of that trend.

By integrating the coherent and Adaptive Optical Engine as a new module for the CN 4200 RS chassis, Ciena will be able to address its various customer segments' (carriers, government and enterprise) needs to keep up with ongoing traffic growth and changing service requirements.

Key elements of Ciena's 40G coherent technology recipe include the use of Dual Polarization Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (DP-QPSK) modulation, coherent detection and electronic dispersion compensation. This technology recipe will allow 40 Gbps transmission over impaired fiber that previously could not be used for 10 Gbps without having to purchase separate optical Chromatic Dispersion (CD) and Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) compensators.

Then, to address existing large CoreStream Agility Optical Transport System customers, Ciena is also integrating its 40G/100G Adaptive Optical Engine technology into a new FlexSelect Optical Shelf. With this new feature, Ciena's existing CoreStream customers--a list that includes multiple Tier 1s--can offer 40G/100G wavelengths on their network across 10G-engineered links.

The ability to address future and of course its existing CoreStream installed base will resonate well with the likes of customers such as AT&T, which recently named Ciena as one of its domain suppliers for optical equipment.
