Cisco eyes Russia, CIS investments

Could Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States represents the next land of opportunity for telecom companies who have already made their bets in Asia, Africa and Latin America? Cisco Systems thinks so. The company, which has acknowledged an interest in this region in the past, admitted that has contributed what it described as a significant investment to a major regional venture capital fund.

As Cisco looks to get in on the ground floor of start-ups in Russia and the CIS, there has been other significant action in the region in the last seven months, with VimpelCom acquiring Golden Telecom and Corbina Telecom ramping up an IPTV launch.
