Cisco maintains 62.2 percent market share in Ethernet switch market

Cisco Systems (Nasdaq: CSCO) continues to enjoy a dominant spot in the Ethernet switch market with a 62.2 percent market share in Q2 2013. It also holds a 67 percent spot in the growing 10 GbE market segment, according to IDC.

Interestingly, the vendor's switching line was a major contributor to its fiscal Q4 revenue mix, rising 5 percent to $3.8 billion.

Overall, the worldwide enterprise and service provider router market rose 3.7 percent year-over-year and 14.6 percent sequentially.

On a geographic basis, the results were certainly mixed with growth in North America, EMEA and Latin America and declines in Asia Pacific.

North America was the dominant market, growing 10.7 percent year-over-year. Not far behind was Latin America, which was up 6.4 percent year over year, while EMEA grew 1 percent year-over-year gain as macroeconomic conditions began to improve. However, the Asia/Pacific router revenue declined 5 percent over the past year.

From a product segment perspective, 10 Gb Ethernet switch (Layer 2/3) revenue increased 12.9 percent year over year to $2 billion while 10 Gb Ethernet switch port shipments grew a strong 52 percent year-over-year to 4.7 million ports in 2Q13.

"10 GbE continues to be the primary driver of the overall Ethernet switch market, with the early stage 40 GbE starting to reach critical mass as a stand-alone segment," IDC said in its release.

Meanwhile, the worldwide Layer 4-7 switching market returned to positive year-over-year growth in Q2 2013, with a 2.4 percent sequential and 1.2 percent annual increase this quarter.
