Cisco maintains dominant revenue share in data center Ethernet switch market, says research group

As service providers expand their cloud service footprints, sales of the 40 Gigabit Ethernet (GE) switches for data centers jumped 40 percent year-over-year. The top five vendors, including Arista, Cisco, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Juniper and white box sales, all exceeded $40 million in 40 GE revenue in the first quarter of 2016, according to figures tabulated by Dell'Oro Group. The research firm has forecast 100 GE adoption will start to gain momentum by the end of the year. Cisco retained the top spot in terms of GE sales with 55 percent of revenue share, followed by Arista, White Box, HPE, Juniper, and Dell.

"We anticipate the migration towards 100 GE will happen in the 2Q16/3Q16 timeframe with 40 GE declining significantly by 4Q16," said Alan Weckel, VP of Dell'Oro Group, in a release. "The market has not been able to acquire sufficient supplies of silicon for the server NIC, Top-of-Rack switches and core switches in the first quarter of the year to make the transition happen earlier." Release
