Clearwire still aiming for WiMAX pairing

Tools

Who: Clearwire, based in Kirkland, Wash.

Vitals: The broadband wireless operator founded by cellular pioneer Craig McCaw in late 2003 has rapidly expanded over the last four years or so. The service provider now has 394,000 customers in 16 states, mostly in secondary or medium-sized markets.

Why you should care: Clearwire and Sprint Nextel are said to be close to re-booting their nationwide WiMAX joint venture. Clearwire continues to post impressive subscriber gains--but also continues to lose money, having just posted a net loss of $83.1 million for the fourth quarter of 2007. The WiMAX joint venture could present a new competitive threat to wireline telcos.
