Clinton, Miss., qualifies for C Spire's 1 Gbps FTTH service

C Spire said that Clinton has become the fourth Mississippi city to reach the homeowner pre-registration threshold, enabling the service provider to bring its 1 Gbps fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) broadband data, HDTV and phone services to the community.

On March 24, C Spire said that Clinton's Cascades fiberhood reached its pre-registration target. Cascades joins Southern Oaks, Hunter's Ridge-Indian Trails and Bruenburg North fiberhoods, which qualified for the Internet service in late January.

The service provider said that it expects to complete engineering and construction in the latest Clinton fiberhood in June. It will launch commercial service by mid-October in all four areas of the city.

Clinton Mayor Phil Fisher said other parts of the city are making progress and are expected to qualify for the 1 Gbps soon, including the Bruenburg South, Linda Drive and Lakeridge fiberhoods.

"That's a good thing because we want to ensure that this service is available in every area of our city where residents want it," he said in a release.

Similar to other cities it has launched, including most recently Jackson, the 1 Gbps Internet access is available for $70 a month, $90 a month for combined Internet and home phone, $130 for Internet and super HD TV and $150 a month for the three-service package.

All non-customers must pay an additional $10 a month on all packages.

C Spire may be a smaller provider, but its move reflects the trend that there's just as much desire for a higher speed 1 Gbps broadband service in rural areas.

Of course, it is not alone in its desires. TDS Telecom is also rolling out 1 Gbps service in mainly rural markets such as Hollis, N.H., and Halls, Tenn., markets where residential customers had few options besides copper-based DSL services and satellite, for example.
