Comcast boosts Bay Area broadband

In the San Francisco Bay Area, Comcast Corp is responding to increasing competition from the telcos, namely AT&T, by launching a new broadband service tier called Blast that doubles its download speeds to 16 Mbps for the same price as its 8 Mbps Performance Plus service. Upload speeds will be boosted to 2 Mbps from about 768 kbps. Customers of the company's existing Performance Plus service will be automatically upgraded. The upgrade should increase Comcast's competitiveness after a tough year, but some telcos who have started offering symmetrical download/upload speeds may still have the upper hand with some broadband users.
