Comcast, Limelight line up behind IPv6

Cable TV giant Comcast and content delivery network firm Limelight Networks are the latest companies to jump on the IPv6 train as it prepares to leave the station. Comcast announced at the North American Network Operators Group's 46th meeting (NANOG46) this week in Philadelphia that it is making IPv6 transport available for its wholesale customers, which will be good news for the companies that host the almost 18 million Websites supported by Comcast's network.

Limelight also said earlier this week that its CDN services would now support IPv6, and, in saying so, may have become the first CDN vendor with broad support for the protocol. Both announcements also come as Verizon Wireless reportedly called for future LTE mobile devices to be able to support IPv6. IPv6 will succeed IPv4, which the telecom industry has been warned numerous times is running low on address support.
