Comcast plans major spectrum recapture project

Tools

Following up after Comcast's first-quarter earnings call yesterday, the cable TV giant said it is pursuing a $1 billion spectrum reclamation project that will allow it to gain up to 300 Mhz of spectrum that could be applied to DOCSIS 3.0, the enabling of more high-definition TV channels, the creation of a broader video-on-demand (VoD) library and other needs, Light Reading's Cable Digital News reports.

Though the project will cost $1 billion over this year and next year, it will be far less expensive than physically upgrading the firm's network. Comcast already is pursuing the reclamation strategy in at least two markets, with several more getting ready to go.
