Could 5G wireless drive out the need for fixed network operators?

As wireless operators and their vendor partners put their 5G plans in place, the ultimate winners will be consumers and businesses, which could gain a wider range of new speeds and capabilities available regardless of their location.

Industry analyst and consultant Keith Mallinson says in a new FierceWireless column that as the 5G wireless ecosystem emerges, the telecom industry should look at the role of wireline networks and how they are able to work in closer conjunction with mobile networks. Still, however compelling such a strategy is, Mallinson identifies three main impediments: regulation/licensing, organization and standards. For more, check out Mallinson's column here.
