Covad flexes its wholesale service muscle

Covad Communications is not wasting any time extending new network capabilities to its wholesale customer base, as it has begun offering services on its completed nationwide MPLS network and its existing metro networks that it has upgraded to OC-192 (10 Gbps) capacity. Covad's latest DS3 and enhanced bonded T1 products are also proof of that commitment. This latest service mix follows an earlier announcement the CLEC made this year to upgrade its core network and offer a bonded T1 service. Coupled with the new bandwidth capabilities, Covad is also providing wholesale customers network-wide Quality of Service.

Already selling DSL and T1-based products to many large service providers including AT&T and Sprint, Covad's more recent network upgrade efforts and its latest enhanced service capabilities have already taken effect. Glowpoint, a video conferencing provider, is leveraging Covad's new capabilities for its ‘Broadcast Television' service. "For advanced applications like our broadcast television offering, the need for fast delivery of a high-quality network is critical to our success," said Tom Schroeder, vice president of operations at Glowpoint, in the Covad press release. "Covad has been, and continues to be, a key component of our success."

But selling DS3 and enhanced T1 services is just the tip of the iceberg. Covad's newly- appointed CTO Aamir Hussain plans to leverage its MPLS-based core network to deliver Ethernet services, according to an article in Telephony.
