Cox sizes up fiber network architectures

Cox Communications reportedly has issued a wide-ranging request for information on various fiber-to-the-premises technologies. Like most of the cable TV industry, the company uses a traditional hybrid fiber-coaxial cable architecture, but is now said, according to a report in Light Reading's Cable Digital News, to be looking at FTTP and architectures such as passive optical network approaches and up-and-comer RF over Glass.

But, don't go thinking that Cox is ready to give its network an extreme makeover. The cable TV firm, as the RFI suggests, is just gathering information for now, and its interest in sizing up different network designs may be more relative to particular field applications or limited new market build-outs than anything else.
