CTDI adds Alloptic's assets to its war chest

CTDI continues to fill up its acquisition plate with new assets. Now, the company has acquired PON equipment vendor Alloptic, which has been expanding its Radio Frequency over Glass (RFoG), a transitional Fiber to the Premises (FTTP) technology for cable operators that it sold directly regional operators and to large MSOs through a partnership with Motorola.

However, according to a LightReading article, CTDI already had the acquisition in the can in February. What's more, former Nyquist Captial analyst turned Infonetics Research optical analyst Andrew Schmitt previously posted a "CTDI looks to buy Alloptic" rumor on message boards.

The acquisition of Alloptic--its fifth since June 2008--could also signify a shift in CTDI's overall product and company strategy.

For one, Brian Parsons, VP of CTDI's products division said in the LightReading article that the acquisition of Alloptic gives it a foothold in the cable industry with a steady stream of Tier 1 and Tier 2 cable operator customers that want a migration path to Fiber to the Home (FTTH) that won't strand their existing RF-based cable modem termination system (CMTS).

Typically known for purchasing legacy telecom assets such as Motorola's FTTN technology and supporting them for existing telco customers, the Alloptic acquisition could provide CTDI an advanced technology roadmap.
