Data center 25G, 100G adoption will drive Ethernet market to $26B by 2020, says research firm

The ongoing adoption of higher speeds in the data center and campus environments will help drive up Ethernet switch market revenues beyond $26 billion in 2020. Dell'Oro Group says that 2.5 Gbps and 5 Gbps will see demand in campus environments while 25 Gbps and 100 Gbps will drive upgrades for data centers.

The research group noted that in the data center, the majority of revenue growth during the forecast period is predicted to come from 25 Gbps and 100 Gbps. Alternatively, 10 Gbps and 40 Gbps will both decline "significantly."

"2016 is the start of two significant upgrade cycles. In the campus, the market is moving beyond 1 Gbps toward 2.5 Gbps and 5.0 Gbps to support higher bandwidth access points," said Alan Weckel, VP at Dell'Oro Group. "Concurrently, the data center is migrating towards 25 Gbps and 100 Gbps across both enterprises and Cloud providers."
