Vitals: The company was founded in 1996 by a coalition of 15 small independent telcos serving about 85 percent of the exchange in North Dakota and geographically covering about 90 percent of the state.

Why you should care: DCN has been on the cutting edge already by deploying carrier Ethernet services for North Dakota customers, and now it is moving to provider backbone transport, a new flavor of carrier Ethernet that has gained support from BT and a handful of others.
