DE-CIX New York signs on Akamai as its first customer

DE-CIX, a German-based Internet exchange provider, has activated Akamai as the first customer on its New York platform. Akamai is connecting into DE-CIX's Internet exchange in New York at its 111 8th Avenue access site in New York City.

While this pact in New York is new, the two companies are hardly strangers since Akamai also uses DE-CIX's services in Europe and the Middle East.

Steven J. Schecter, senior manager of network architecture for Akamai, said that "this new Internet exchange in New York will enable us to connect with other peering partners across a resilient Ethernet platform."

Gaining Akamai as a customer is important for DE-CIX New York, particularly as it looks to further establish its presence in the U.S. peering and Internet exchange market segment.

New York has become one of DE-CIX's new growth targets. In February, the service provider announced that it was expanding its Apollon technology platform to service 111 access points in Manhattan, New Jersey and Long Island.

Nearly all of the 111 access points at DE-CIX New York are already 100 GE-ready, and the remaining points will be upgraded to 100 GE in the near future to accommodate the growing need for bandwidth.

The service provider has continued to attract new content and competitive carriers to the new site. Besides Akamai, it is going to add Anexia, Exponential-e, IPTP Networks and Naver Business Platform to its customer list.
