Deal chatter: Sonus eyeing Nortel, Cedar Point

Tools

Two days after Nokia Siemens Networks confirmed it was considering buying some Nortel Networks assets, an analyst report from Avian Securities suggests that Sonus Networks is interested in acquiring Nortel's VoIP and switching assets, according to Light Reading. The same analyst note says Sonus also wants to buy VoIP system vendor Cedar Point Communications.

Both deals would bring Sonus additional cable telephony customers, though it is perceived that Sonus will have to outlast other bidders for both properties. Nortel remains in bankruptcy protection, and several companies have been named as suitors for various pieces of the firm.

Sonus recently posted a big revenue drop and larger-than-expected net loss in the first quarter, not long after losing two key executives late last year amid a repositioning of the firm under a new CEO.
