Deutsche Telekom conducts 512G transmission experiment

Deutsche Telekom (XETRA: DTE.DE) has found new way to prepare itself for the insatiable demand for bandwidth.

Coming on the heels of various vendors offering products that can deliver 400 Gbps, the service provider's Telekom Innovation Laboratories (T-Labs) division recently demonstrated 512 Gbps transmission speed over a single wavelength channel as part of its OSIRIS (Optically Supported IP Router Interfaces) project.

What's interesting about the OSIRIS experiment, which was conducted in partnership with vendor Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU), is that it was not conducted on a live round-trip 734km network link between Berlin to Hanover.

And while DT admitted that the usable per-channel bit-rate would only be 400 Gbps it is a notable experiment at a time when service providers and vendors are just starting to put 100 Gbps capabilities into commercial networks.
