Deutsche Telekom creates new FTTH subsidiary

Deutsche Telekom (XETRA: DTE.DE) may be Germany's top broadband provider, reaching an estimated 29 million DSL subscribers by the end of this year, but the provider has a bullish outlook on Fiber to the Home (FTTH).

According to a Financial Times Deutschland report citing unnamed sources, DT plans to create a new FTTH subsidiary with 1,500 employees. Dubbed FTTH GmbH, the subsidiary's goal is to enable quicker FTTH network roll outs throughout Germany.

Initially, FTTH GmbH will be staffed with trainees from the Technology and Service divisions, who aren't able to get a job at Deutsche Telekom. Each employee that goes to work at FTTH GmbH will be given a two-year contract.

Right now, it appears that Deutsche Telekom is conducting dress rehearsals of FTTH with trials in 10 cities and a plan to build FTTH out to about 160,000 homes by the end of 2011.
