EarthLink is expanding the services it offers to small and medium businesses (SMBs) through its new deployment of IaaS vendor Virtustream's enterprise-class cloud services package, xStream.

EarthLink's data center in Rochester, N.Y., will be the first to deploy xStream software, and the provider plans to use Virtustream's product in four new data centers that are coming online in 1H 2013 in Dallas, Chicago, San Jose, Calif., and Miami.

The xStream deployment is the latest in a string of SMB-focused service additions by EarthLink designed to affordably help businesses shift away from facilities-based IT services and into cloud-based environments.

"With the xStream cloud software deployed as part of our next-generation cloud architecture, we will more efficiently serve our clients in the SMB market," said Mike Toplisek, executive vice president of sales and marketing for EarthLink. "We can bring additional economies of both scale and skills to our small and mid-sized clients, a privilege once afforded by large enterprises only."

Deploying xStream in EarthLink's cloud services platform gives its customers access to services that address security, pricing and application performance SLAs as well as business continuity and compliance. The software helps handle complex network routing and enables resource pooling.

EarthLink has come a long way from its early ISP days. The provider has steadily built out a nationwide high-speed network stretching over 28,000 route miles--completing a middle-mile network in eastern Tennessee last November--and has four data centers currently online. It has embraced the cloud services model, offering SMBs a range of services including managed cloud, managed services, virtualization and cloud workspace.
