Embarq trims FTTP deployment costs

Tools

Independent telco Embarq has not been as aggressive deploying fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) technology as some other carriers have, choosing to deploy it only in new home developments and other greenfield venues. But, at the Fiber to the Home Conference in Nashville this week, an Embarq executive said that the telco has managed to cut the average per-home cost of deploying FTTP by about 19 percent this year alone.

The telco uses FTTP as a broadband technology, and not as a basis for a separate TV service. But if costs continue to come down, enabling an IPTV service over the architecture probably would become a more attractive idea. One of Embarq's methods for cutting costs was to outsource part of the deployment job to fiber specialist Corning.
