Equinix (Nasdaq: EQIX) has laid another brick in its growing home U.S. market by opening its fifth operational International Business Exchange (IBX) facility in Dallas, one of its fastest growing markets.

Dubbed DA6, the new data center location will support what it says is "growing demand" for Platform Equinix in the Dallas/Fort Worth metro area.

The service provider invested more than $34 million in the first phase of the DA6 data center, including space, power and cooling for 450 cabinets.

In future phases, DA6 will support an additional 900 network equipment cabinets for a total of more than 82,000 square feet of usable colocation space. Upon completion, Equinix's total Dallas data center footprint will surpass 230,000 square feet dispersed over five data centers.

One of the key features of Equinix's data center facilities in Dallas is that four of them are located in the Dallas Infomart, a 1.6 million-square-foot building with multiple diverse fiber entry points into the building.

There a number of reasons that Dallas is a significant market for Equinix and the data center industry overall.

Dallas serves as one of the major Internet and network peering exchange points for international Internet traffic coming to and from the U.S. and Latin America, a market the data center provider has been aggressively expanding into in recent years. It is also a major business hub with 18 of the Fortune 500 having key locations in the city.

Besides the U.S. and Latin America, Equinix has built out facilities in six European countries and five Asia Pacific countries, making it a viable option for large multinational corporation customers that need data center connectivity in multiple markets.

Equinix's latest build also represents the growing demand for colocation services. According to a recent MarketsandMarkets report, the colocation market is forecast to grow from $25.72 billion in 2013 to $43.34 billion by 2018.
