Ericsson wins FTTH deals in China

Ericsson announced it has earned fiber-to-the-home equipment supply deals from China's three leading telcos, China Telecom, China Mobile and China Unicom. The announcement comes not long after Alcatel-Lucent said it was involved in a gigabit passive optical networking FTTH trial. These deals and others may show, according to Light Reading Asia, that China will be the next fertile territory for GPON FTTH to take root. Still, Ethernet PON and and DSL remain widely-deployed and still-viable technologies there.

Ericsson's 2007 acquisition of GPON specialist Entrisphere was seen as one of the defining moves of a developing worldwide GPON market powering up to support applications such as IPTV. The market may have been slower to grow than expected, though, and some vendors, such as Nokia Siemens Networks, have not been as exuberant, suggesting instead that VDSL2 can deliver similar advantages.
