FairPoint brings data center service to Laconia, N.H.

FairPoint has opened a new data center in Laconia, N.H., where it will offer businesses and state and local government agencies a facility that includes rack space and connections for managing off-site disaster recovery, computing, storage and other IT equipment.

Similar to large data center providers like Equinix, FairPoint's data centers include all of the typical accouterments including power, cooling, connectivity and security features, such as 24x7x365 video camera monitoring and keycard access.

Given the diversity of customers it serves, FairPoint's data center offers various space options, scaling down to half-rack to cages. A team of account managers also works with each customer to develop a service that can deliver remote storage and offsite compute capacity to redundant disaster recovery.

"As more organizations seek to reduce capital expenses and adapt to the ever-evolving technology and regulatory landscape, we continue to see the need for data center services," said Chris Alberding, FairPoint vice president of product management, in a release.

Being the dominant telco in the northern New England area, FairPoint has built a sizeable fiber-based network and Ethernet service footprint. In May, the service provider introduced 1 Gbps speed Ethernet services to 32 markets across its New England serving territory.

It can combine those elements with the new data center service to battle growing threats from cable operators like Comcast (NASDAQ: CMCSA) while making itself more valuable to its existing and growing base of banks, hospitals and government agency customers.
