FairPoint serves up 100 Mbps fiber-based broadband service in southern New Hampshire

FairPoint has upgraded its last mile network in eight southern New Hampshire communities to extend 100 Mbps speeds to more than 58,000 subscribers that qualify for the fiber to the home (FTTH) service. FairPoint assumed ownership of the network when it purchased Verizon's (NYSE: VZ) New England lines in 2008.

The service provider now offers eligible users speeds up to 100 Mbps/75 Mbps in Portsmouth, Salem, Atkinson, Plaistow, Epping, Exeter, Hampton and Nashua.

In addition to the top 100 Mbps speed, FairPoint is introducing 50 Mbps and 75 Mbps download speed options.

Over the past six years, the telco has invested more than $700 million, a large portion of which includes laying thousands of miles of fiber throughout its New England region and upgrading its last mile facilities to extend broadband to more households and businesses.

While FairPoint does not break out how many fiber-based subscribers it has, broadband overall continues to be a major growth engine for the service provider.

During the first quarter, it added 1,700 subscribers to reach a total 331,538 subscribers at the end of the quarter.
