Florida AT&T customers left without wireline service after construction accident

A number of AT&T (NYSE: T) wireline customers in Pompano Beach, Fla., have been without service for almost 10 days after a construction company cut into severed one of the telco's area cables.

It doesn't look like the situation is going to be remedied immediately as the telco's Internet, TV and phone customers in Pompano Beach may be without services for two weeks or more.

The Sun Sentinel reports that 412 of an initial 591 AT&T customers are still without service following the Jan. 5 outage caused by a construction crew severing transmission lines.

Kelly Starling, a local AT&T spokeswoman, told the Sun Sentinel that the repairs will take two more weeks because "the extensive damage to our cables and ducts required us to rebuild our infrastructure before we could start working on rebuilding connectivity."

She added that it would work with customers on "case-by-case" basis to determine if their bills will be adjusted because of the outage.

Pompano Beach is an important market for AT&T's 1 Gbps GigaPower broadband service. Following initial rollouts in the Fort Lauderdale and Miami metro areas, the provider announced it would start bringing service to the city.
