Forget exabytes; zettabytes may arrive by 2015

Seattle Discovery Institute Fellow Bret Swanson, who has received much of the credit for introducing the term "exaflood" into the telecom lexicon, now says Internet traffic could equal 1 zettabyte (1000 exabytes) by 2015. Exaflood chatter has excited and frightened the telecom industry in equal measure, but it doesn't seem like Swanson, who spoke at the FTTH Council Europe event this week, is hyping the zettabyte--simply suggesting the possibility. He points out that Internet traffic in the U.S. alone would have to increase about "50-fold vs. the 2006 figure," and that huge investments in FTTH technology would need to continue.
