Former AT&T CEO Whitacre to lead GM

Tools

The Wall Street Journal is reporting former AT&T CEO Edward Whitacre Jr. will take over ailing automaker General Motors later this summer after the company emerges from bankruptcy protection. Current GM interim Chairman Kent Kresa will remain at his post until later this summer.

Whitacre, 67, led AT&T and its predecessor companies through a series of mergers and acquisitions, including SBC's acquisition of AT&T in 2005, which created the nation’s largest provider of local, long distance and wireless services. He was with the carrier and its predecessor companies from 1990 to 2007. He currently serves on the board of Exxon Mobil and Burlington Northern Santa Fe, reports CNBC.

it all comes clear now. early in contract negotiations at&t was telling the union that they had to pay thyeir medical by comparing the telephone industry with the auto industry. now our ex-ceo becomes one of their leaders

There goes any hope for a GM electric vehicle with an Exxon-Mobil board member running Government Motors.

GM will become extinct and, with Ed Whitacre as the CEO, that will happen sooner than later. All he did as the CEO of SW Bell/SBC/AT&T was to go on a continuous buying binge that guaranteed him his job. His total compensation over 17 years at the top was an astonishing 550 million, whereas shareholders and employees were left out in the cold holding the bag. Unfortunately, this time around it will be all of us (the taxpayers). Here's what an analysts had to say about Mr. Whitacre's appointment today:

"Telecom industry analyst Victor Schnee at Probe Financial said Whitacre's appointment to GM was 'bizarre.' 'The guy accomplished a number of things in telecom and we all thought the book was closed,' Schnee said. Whitacre was 'old-school empire builder,' Schnee said, and deserves credit for investing early and heavily in wireless.
But in terms of long-term visions for the industry, Whitacre was not much better than GM's management, in Schnee's opinion. 'What happened was that wireless came along and created one of the most amazing growth markets in the world, and therefore bailed out sinking ships like Verizon and AT&T,' Schnee said."

GM is poking fun at American taxpayers. Mr. Whitacre is best known for relationships with golfers, union officials and government bureaucrats. We can also expect Dave Dorman to be appointed to the board. Mr. Dorman was a Sprint marketing VP who became CEO of Pacific Bell. He sold Pacific Bell to Mr. Whitacre at SBC. Then Mr. Dorman went to AT&T, became CEO and again sold out to Mr. Whitacre and SBC to concoct the new AT&T brand. Mr. Dorman is currently on board at Motorola. If government is to be involved in enterprise bailouts, then Americans need leaders with a track record of profitably transforming businesses.

Fuel prices are surely go to skyrocket. Workers should start looking for a new job immediately. When the CEO or other upper management from any RBOC takes over it can only spell disaster and higher prices as well as they will snuff our the competition.
