Foundry molds Ethernet opportunities for Brocade

Brocade Communications Systems plans to close its acquisition of Foundry Networks in the fourth quarter of this year, and at its analyst day event this week, the company talked about the reasons behind the deal. Brocade suggested that it went after Foundry more for next-generation Ethernet business opportunities having to do with converged enhanced Ethernet (CEE) technology for data centers than for Foundry's growing success in the service provider market.

The service provider angle certainly drew our attention when the deal was announced, but given that the carrier market has been filled with uncertainty of late, maybe it is a good thing Brocade considers it a bonus.
