Frontier Communications has named Becky B. Potts as its new president for the telco's national region, overseeing operations in multiple states in the Midwest, Southeast and Western states.

Potts will oversee operations in nine states: Arizona, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, South Carolina and Utah.

She most recently served as Frontier's chief customer officer where she was responsible for managing customer relations for residential and business contact centers, credit and collections and alternate distribution channels.

John Lass, who had been recently promoted as Frontier's EVP of field operations, said that Potts' customer service experience will come in handy as she advances the national region. He added that Potts was also a major contributor to the transformation of the company's contact centers and earlier led many of the states that comprise the national region.

Another key trait Potts brings to the role is integration of business processes, particularly those that come through acquisition of other companies.

Prior to coming to Frontier, Potts was president of one of the largest travel companies in the country. Earlier, she spent 10 years as the vice president/general manager of AT&T Wireless (NYSE: T) and was responsible for $1 billion in annual sales and more than 1 million customers. During her tenure at AT&T Wireless, Potts managed the transition and mergers between McCaw Communications and AT&T Wireless, and between AT&T Wireless and Cingular.

Potts' appointment comes during a transitional time for the telco.

In March, Maggie Wilderotter announced that she was stepping down as CEO, a role that would be taken over by Dan McCarthy, Frontier's president and COO.

Besides the management changes, Frontier made one of its largest deals in company history by reaching an agreement to purchase Verizon's (NYSE: VZ) wireline assets in three states for $10.5 billion. In 2010, Frontier purchased Verizon's rural lines in 14 states, a deal that helped scale its business to serve 4 million residential, including FiOS, and business customers in 27 states.

In addition, the service provider completed its acquisition of AT&T's wireline assets in Connecticut in October--one that enhanced Frontier's presence in the state, including the addition of U-verse video and broadband services to its portfolio.
