Genachowski to be new FCC Chaiman?
The Washington Post reports today that Julius Genachowski, who drafted Barack Obama's "Innovation Agenda" during the presidential campaign, could be named chairman of the FCC as soon as today. Genachowski attended Harvard Law School with Obama, and he served as chief counsel to former FCC Chairman Reid Hundt so he knows the scope of the position well. He also was Obama's lead technology advisor, so he's certainly going to be on the same page as the President-Elect on issues like Net Neutrality, broadband expansion, and large amounts of funding for technology projects.
The article claims that Genachowski also considered the newly-created CTO role in the administration, but decided to direct his aspirations at the FCC chairman position because of its much greater regulatory role.
Genachowski has an impressive record working with technology and communications companies: He was Chief of Business Operations at InterActiveCorp; he's co-founder of Rock Creek Ventures, which currently backs 11 internet-based start-ups, and he's also served on the boards of numerous technology ad new media companies, including The Motley Fool, Web.com, Truveo, and Rapt. Genachowski holds a BA from Columbia College and a JD from Harvard Law School.

Beware Genachowski! The so-called "Fairness Doctrine" hides a VERY dangerous insidious little device that establishes control over EVERYTHING allowed on the air and EVEN TO THE INTERNET! If you don't like what the advertisers pay for because their constituency largely demands something, turn it off. If I disagree with something I hear on radio or TV, I simply tune out or turn off; I don't think it's my prerogative to silence it for others. Obama and Genachowski, through the "Fairness Doctrine" believe they have a right and a responsiblity to safeguard the sensibilities of the oppressed and repressed and disposessed by disallowing what they label as "hate speech", simply because they disagree with it. Your freedoms end where mine begin and vice versa. The "Fairness Doctrine" is just another chipping away at ALL OF OUR collective freedoms, and Genachowski will wield the big chisel while Obama strikes with the hammer.
Well I guess you get what you voted for. With an IP based background like that (I'm sure he made his money selling his interest in startups), the RIAA/MPAA are shoe-ins for becoming buddy buddy with the FCC. After all, they need to protect their Imaginary Property, and I'm sure he will be quite understanding.
Just about what one would expect, I suppose. Sadly, the possible new chairman of the nations' top wireless regulatory agency seems to be
somewhat shy of any technical background or experience on the RF or wireless side of the ledger. Guess my expectations were unrealistic
for any real change on the 8th floor anytime soon. It appears that spectrum regulation primarily based on economic and political agendas
will continue to rank higher on the spectrum management totem pole than any based primarily on responsible technical leadership. (BIG SIGH)
When will we ever get a chairman at the FCC who actually has a technical education? Genachowski may or may not be a good candidate. What I despair of, having dealt with the FCC, is the incredible lack of technical understanding they possess. They're all lawyers and policy wonks without a bit of real street technology credibility.
Mr Genachowski sounds like a good choice. My comment is mired in ignorance, but I just want to describe a local situation. I live in a small Texas town (Brenham) about midway between Austin and Houston. Our local AM station carries Rush Limbaugh. We also receive the AM stations from surrounding towns, including Austin, San Antonio, Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth, and Bryan/College Station. Each town has at least one station that carries at least one of the rabid right blowviators, and the larger towns of course have several each. But not one single AM radio station, in any town within our reception range, has even a single talk show by non-ultra-right-wing host or hostess. We did have an Air America station just outside Austin, but it mysteriously disappeared one night. I still hear their news guy occasionally on one of the San Antonio stations. We also can receive several so-called "Christian" FM radio stations from throughout the area. Their talkers are at least as rabid as the AM talk show hosts.
Most of the voters In Washington County where I live are republicans. They voted almost 3 to 1 for Bush in 2004. I can't help but wonder if part of the reason isn't the crap they hear on the radio? I don't listen all the time to those idiots, but I continue hearing their accusations that Barack Obama is going to try to silence the right-wing broadcasters by reinstituting the "Fairness Doctrine". Their silly charge aside, is there any truth to their statement that the Fairness Doctrine is going to be studied? I hope so.
