GENBAND's Aztek acquisition helps it target more TDM-to-IP transformation projects

GENBAND has bolstered its TDM-to-IP transformation engine by reaching a deal to acquire Aztek Networks, a vendor focused on switch consolidation and network migration solutions.

Under the terms of the agreement, GENBAND will acquire all of all of Aztek's assets and entire portfolio. However, neither company revealed the financial terms of the deal.

One of the key pieces of the acquisition is Aztek's 5000-series, which will be supported and marketed under the GENBAND G5 platform brand.

Stu Elby, Vice President of Network Architecture and Technology at Verizon (NYSE: VZ), an existing GENBAND customer via its acquisition of the former Nortel's voice assets, said what's compelling about the 5000 series is that it enables service providers like Verizon eliminate legacy TDM sites, consolidate and modernize their core networks.

"In addition to assisting operators in realizing the benefits of switching consolidation and repurposing of precious Central Office space, an efficient network transformation offering must also ensure services are delivered without disruption," Elby said. "GENBAND's ability to meet our network transformation needs is strengthened through the integration of Aztek's technology."

While it's clear that service providers like Verizon are leading the telco charge to transition their traditional TDM-based PSTN networks to IP, they need to do it in a way that won't disrupt existing services.

The movement to IP-based voice networks, while an ongoing transition that will take a number of years, continues to bode well for vendors like GENBAND.

According to Infonetics' Q4 2011 Service Provider VoIP and IMS Equipment and Subscribers vendor market share and forecast report, GENBAND and Huawei continue to lead the segment. In addition to seeing 20 percent growth in North America and EMEA, Latin America saw a 34 percent increase in carrier VoIP and IMS sales, particularly in Brazil and Mexico.
