Gerke stresses innovation, steers clear of TV

Tools

New Embarq CEO Tom Gerke says he will continue to back some innovative moves the independent telco made in the last year or so, while still keeping the company away from expensive fiber-based IPTV projects. By staking its broadband strategy on 10 Mbps Internet access, Embarq is carving a path for itself similar to the one being taken now by Qwest Communications. The rule goes something like this: If satellite TV ain't broke, then don't fix it, and also just give users enough bandwidth, and they will figure out what to do with it. True, it isn't catchy, but it covers the essential. Gerke also is talking about continuing Embarq's progress with fixed-mobile convergence and online video sales, among other efforts to make the company less dependent on landline telephone service.
