Global Capacity establishes Ethernet interconnection into Google's cloud platform

Global Capacity's enterprise customers will soon have another way to connect to the cloud as its One Marketplace platform has become one of Google's cloud interconnect service providers, giving it a direct connection into the Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) cloud platform.

The One Marketplace platform, which offers a host of applications and real-time network pricing and ordering with end-to-end delivery of private Ethernet connectivity and IP services, will provide network connectivity to Google's cloud platform.

This agreement will provide benefits to both existing Global Capacity customers and Google cloud customers alike. Global Capacity's 20,000 business customers can connect to the Google cloud platform.

Ben Edmond, chief revenue officer of Global Capacity, told FierceTelecom that the company will be able to accommodate more than 4,513 last-mile interconnection agreements into the One Marketplace platform that allows migration to cloud services like Google.

"We can now offer a direct connectivity from our Ethernet footprint through a series of interconnects through our platform and theirs," Edmond said. "Really what we think is most compelling in the partnership is the ability to open up that direct connectivity to the 9.6 million addresses we reach in the access network that Global Capacity brings to the equation to business locations across the country."

Likewise, Google's enterprise customers can use the One Marketplace and its Network Builder application to design, price and order data connectivity between their business locations and Google Platform locations through Google's Cloud Interconnect (GCI) program.

What's different about this pact is customers can get private connections into the Google Cloud.

"We are excited about being part of Google's ecosystem and as a first stepping point to provide that to the 20,000 business-plus customers that are already using Global Capacity to make those on ramps available so those customers can go and consume the Google Cloud Platform on private connectivity versus the public Internet," Edmond said.

A business could get a direct Ethernet interconnection from Global Capacity to access any Google Cloud Platform service including Google Compute Engine, Google Cloud Storage and Google BigQuery to create everything from a website to a complex application. One Marketplace provides guaranteed bandwidth with connections ranging from as low as 1 Mbps up to 10 Gbps, a factor that helps developers and enterprises to build, test and deploy applications on Google's cloud infrastructure.

Providing interconnection into cloud providers is nothing new for Global Capacity. In 2013, it became a select member of Amazon Web Services' AWS Partner Network (APN), providing private network connections to AWS.

Stopping short of naming any new partners, Edmond said the company will continue to seek out new cloud service relationships with a mix of household name providers and even more specialized players.

"We will continue to negotiate and invest in interconnects into other infrastructure cloud platforms that are name brands out there and the specialty ones that really drive activity inside the enterprise," Edmond said. "These aren't players with household names but are important to simplify that provisioning process, improve the economics and provide that security that enterprises are looking for with a private connection via Ethernet over MPLS or IP."
