Global Crossing expands global Ethernet product suite

By adding global VPLS capabilities to its EtherSphere WAN transport portfolio, Global Crossing is tapping into a market opportunity that Ovum Research says will increase from $1.3 billion in 2008 to $8.4 billion in 2014. Global Crossing's suit of EtherSphere services will include three new offerings: EtherSphere Multipoint-to-Multipoint, EtherSphere Point-to-Multipoint and EtherSphere Point-to-Point services. These services are available to both enterprise and wholesale carrier customers in North America, the U.K., Asia and Latin America.

Prior to launching the new global EtherSphere service, Global Crossing only offered it in the U.K. as a metro Ethernet product. Provided over the Global Crossing dedicated MPLS backbone network, the new service offers carrier and wholesale customers a global VPLS-based service. The new EtherSphere services support six classes of service that enable users to prioritize traffic to maximize bandwidth use and efficiency. In addition, EtherSphere offers a pay-for-what-you-use component to help enterprise customer's deal with irregular and unpredictable bandwidth use.
