Google Fiber gets green light to bring service to Leawood, Kan.

Google Fiber (Nasdaq: GOOG) has named Leawood, Kan. as the next city where it's going to deliver its fiber to the premises (FTTP) service after it received approval from the city council last night. Leawood will become the fourteenth Kansas City-area community where it will deliver service to residential customers.

The service provider, as usual, did not provide a timeline as to when it would begin installing or building out necessary facilities provide service.

"We look forward to bringing service to Leawood, but there's quite a bit of planning and construction work to do before we can actually start hooking up homes," said Rachel Hack, Google Fiber community manager, in a blog post.

When they do launch services in Leawood, Google Fiber will again face off with area incumbent telco AT&T (NYSE: T) and cable MSO Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWX), which today offer speeds of up to 10-25 Mbps and 100 Mbps, respectively.

AT&T has been making a number of upgrades to its wireline network in Kansas as part of its ongoing Project VIP initiative. During the first half of this year, the telco enabled almost 10,150 customer locations with U-verse services in the state.

It has been a busy month for Google Fiber. Just last week it unveiled pricing schemes for the Internet plans it will offer over its 1 Gbps-capable network in Provo, Utah. Earlier, it announced a number of other new Kansas City, Kan. areas it would bring services to, including Lee's Summit, Mission, and Prairie Village.
