Google Fiber makes Lenexa, Kan. its seventeenth FTTH location

Google Fiber (Nasdaq: GOOG) has gotten approval from the Lenexa, Kan. City Council to bring its 1 Gbps Fiber to the Home (FTTH) data and video services to their residents. This is the seventeenth Kansas City-area expansion city in addition to Kansas City, Kan. and Kansas City, Mo.

"We're excited to bring service to Lenexa, but we still need to plan and start building our network there before we can open sign-ups or share any information about customer installation," wrote Rachel Hack, Community Manager for Google Fiber, in a blog post.

Hack added that residents in Lenexa can stay abreast of the progress Google is making in their city on their blog and get e-mail updates.

While Google Fiber has been making continual progress in getting approvals from various Kansas City-area cities, including most recently Mission Hills and Fairway, Kan., it hit a speed bump with Overland Park city officials.

As reported by FierceIPTV citing a Kansas City Star article, city officials noted that a liability concern in the legal agreement between it and Google Fiber needed to be resolved before they could proceed with their FTTH build out.

Interestingly, Google's $70 a month service plan concept is apparently having an effect on the growing community of 1 Gbps service providers. UTOPIA, an open access FTTH provider in Salt Lake City, Utah, and Chattanooga, Tenn.-based EPB Fiber have recently lowered service prices to $65 and $70, respectively.
