Google, Sprint, Microsoft see potential in aggregated Wi-Fi, but initial revenues aren't impressive

Sprint (NYSE: S), Google (NASDAQ: GOOG), Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) and Huawei have developed plans to deploy Wi-Fi to achieve specific goals for their companies. For Sprint and TWC, the mission is to expand and improve coverage. Huawei wants to sell more handsets, while Google and Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) are interested in making their digital services more accessible to a larger audience.

Each of these companies may have their own reasons to expand their Wi-Fi coverage, but as FierceWirelessTech Editor Monica Alleven notes, they all are creating a collection of public Wi-Fi hotspots that can be aggregated together to form what will be a patchwork, nationwide wireless network.
