GTT taps GCX for 100G connectivity between the U.S. and Europe

GTT Communications has established a partnership with submarine cable provider Global Cloud Xchange (GCX) to obtain 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) connectivity between the U.S. and Europe, a move that addresses the growing needs of its multinational business customers.

While GTT operates its own facilities-based IP network that has direct connections to the cloud, the service provider said that it needed to seek out a partner that could help it immediately get access to a 100 GbE IP backbone.

"The addition of 100 Gigabit waves increases our backbone capacity by deploying advanced network infrastructure," said Rick Calder, GTT president and CEO, in a release.

Expanding its connectivity options between the U.S. and Europe comes at a time when GTT continues to scale its presence in both regions. The service provider immediately expanded its Ethernet and managed services footprint by acquiring UNSi, a competitive business-focused service provider last October.

This agreement also illustrates the growing need to get access to higher speed submarine cable networks.

Today, GCX Trans-Atlantic FA-1 network carries over 4 Terabits per second (Tbps) of business data, with the ability to scale capacity up to 30 Tbps. The FA-1 North submarine network services between London and New York, while FA-1 South submarine network links New York to Paris.
