Hawaiian Telcom employs Calix for its broadband expansion drive

Hawaiian Telcom (Nasdaq: HCOM), the tenth largest ILEC by revenue in the United States, is upping the ante of its broadband service by deploying Calix's (NYSE: CALX) Unified Access portfolio.

The service provider will leverage Calix's E3-12C Serviceable Below Grade (SBG) sealed Ethernet Service Access Node (ESAN) and E7-2 Ethernet Service Access Platform (ESAP).

Deployed in the outside plant network, the ILEC will be able to operate in a hybrid fiber/copper environment that make use of VDSL2 to deliver services to the home, but gigabit Ethernet (GE), and 10GE to support a mix of voice, higher speed data, and its emerging IPTV service.

Each of the SBG-based units supports 12 VDSL2/POTS combo ports with ADSL fallback and is capable of bonding. For this deployment, Hawaiian Telcom will use the one rack-unit (1RU) E7-2 ESAP for aggregation of multiple GE lines from deployed E3-12Cs and for ringed 10GE transport.

Given the challenges of the ILEC's outside plant environment, including tidal and rainwater flooding, the E3-12C SBG sealed ESAN can operate and deliver service even when fully immersed in salt water for extended periods of time.

The Hawaiian Telcom deployment is also significant in that it helped Calix cross the 1,000 customer threshold. To date, Calix said that 17 of the 20 largest U.S. ILECs, and over 1,000 communications service providers globally use its products.
