Hibernia wraps North American network expansion, adds six new routes

Hibernia Networks is now ready to offer its growing base of enterprise and carrier customers service on six new long haul fiber routes located in the Northeast region of the United States.

The service provider said that these new routes--including Ashburn to New York, Chicago to New York, New York to Buffalo, New York to Albany and New York to Boston--have been designed as a broader initiative to reduce latency and increase network diversity along the largest terrestrial segment of its global network.

In order to create a path to deliver speeds surpassing 100G, the network expansion includes the deployment of Ciena's 6500 Packet-Optical Platform.

Among the new benefits of these long-haul dark fiber routes are two completely diverse paths from Ashburn to Hibernia's landings in Boston and Halifax with comparable latency and more direct routing between New York and Toronto and Chicago and New York.

"This is part of our overall evolution to introduce diversity and better latency performance throughout our entire network," said David Smith, SVP Global Network Operations of Hibernia Networks, in a release, and that the project "was made possible through continuous and increasing demand for capacity in the region."

Hibernia will also provide additional diversity through Albany, avoiding existing critical infrastructure along the I-95 corridor and adjacent markets.

Completing these latest routes is a continuation of what has been a busy network build period for Hibernia. In late December, the service provider completed the expansion of its Express submarine cable to Cork, Ireland, via the buildout of a new cable landing station, giving area service providers and businesses access to North America and the U.K.
