HomePlug Powerline Alliance launches Netricity PLC for utility smart meter to grid applications

HomePlug Powerline Alliance, has introduced the Netricity Powerline Communications (PLC) specification program to promote the adoption and provide compliance and interoperability testing of products that can be used by utilities in smart grid and smart meter applications.

Leveraging the 1901.2 Low-Frequency Narrow-Band PLC standards, Netricity PLC will operate in low frequency bands ideal for grid-to-utility meter and other long range applications outside of a consumer's home. Other potential uses for the Netricity specification include lighting and solar panel powerline communications.

Although Netricity is new, the program will coexist with HomePlug's family of high speed networking specifications, HomePlug AV, HomePlug Green PHY, and the forthcoming HomePlug AV2.

Already the IEEE 1901.2 standard has been adopted energy providers including IBERDROLA and ERDF for Smart Meter to the Grid communication.

"Our goal with Netricity PLC is to provide customers such as utility and energy companies the foundation of a global standard with a competitive ecosystem of certified products from many vendors," said Rob Ranck, president of the HomePlug Powerline Alliance.

Having an ecosystem of standards-based products will make it easier for utility companies to implement large scale smart grid and smart meter programs.
