Huawei, Ciena and ZTE drive WDM market past $9B, says Dell'Oro

Driven by a doubling of 100G wavelength shipments in 2014, the total WDM market grew 7 percent in 2014, reaching nearly $9.5 billion, according to a new Dell'Oro Group report.

Leading the market from a vendor perspective were four vendors--Huawei, Ciena, ZTE and Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU). Huawei reported 7 percent year-over-year growth, while Ciena and ZTE reported 13 and 34 percent growth, respectively. Finally, Alcatel-Lucent came in with 14 percent growth.

From a regional perspective, Asia-Pacific was the leader with 18 percent growth, while North America saw 4 percent and Europe saw negative growth during the period.

Jimmy Yu, vice president of Optical Transport research at Dell'Oro Group, said inside Asia-Pacific, China drove much of the growth as service providers started to deploy 100G wavelengths on their networks.

"It was another strong year for optical WDM equipment," he said. "The majority of market growth for the year came from heightened demand in China where all service providers are shifting from rolling out 40 Gbps wavelengths to 100 Gbps wavelengths."
