Huawei saw continued growth throughout 2009

While other traditional telecom vendors (Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson and Nokia Siemens Networks) have struggled to get to profitability, China's Huawei continued to hit it big in 2009 with $21.5 billion in revenue. Despite doing well, it saw a decrease over 2008. Huawei expects contract sales to be stable in 2010 in comparison to 2009.

However compelling these results may be, the company warned that these numbers are unaudited and that they could change when it puts out its audited results in April. Still, the Chinese company's $21.5 billion revenue figure is a 17.5 percent increase over 2008 yet down from the 43 percent revenue growth it reported in 2008.

A Huawei spokesperson said that the company has forecasted that contract sales will be up 20 percent to $36 billion, similar to the 20 percent growth in contract sales it reported in 2009.

Huawei continues to become a thorn in the side of traditional telecom vendors, winning not only major wireless contracts with Norway's Telenor, but also in the Asia-Pacific optical market. Now, the company has set its sights on becoming a threat in the U.S. wireless and wireline markets. Signs of Huawei's growing presence in the North American market are being proven with not only wins from Cox Communications (wireless infrastructure) and Mediacom Communications (DWDM), but it's also participating in Verizon's XG PON overlay field test.
