ICANN quickens country domain handling

Under pressure from the international Internet community at this week's Internet Governance Forum meeting in Rio de Janeiro, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers said it will fast-track the handling of country-specific Web domains and the use of local languages in domain names. New ICANN chairman Peter Dengate Thrush, a New Zealand lawyer who took over leadership of ICANN from departing chairman Vinton Cerf, made the announcement at the Rio event.
