Innovation points toward terabit Ethernet

Forget 100G. How about some of that 640G, or even 1T (that would be "terabit")? No sooner have we gotten used to the idea of 100 Gbps Ethernet networks-which aren't even broadly available yet, by the way-than someone has gone and developed an optical chip capable of fully exploiting 640 Gbps transmissions, and which could encourage the reach for terabit Ethernet speeds. The chip, discussed in a Network World post that credits an upcoming Optical Express article, uses a super-small receiver waveguide that more efficiently sorts through multiple wavelengths of signals multiplexed at the sending end.
