Inspecting deep packet inspection

Tools
Deep packet inspection draws controversy

What:
Deep packet inspection technology for monitoring/managing network traffic.
Why you should care: DPI technology provides a way to better manage increasingly complex network traffic content, particularly as the the volume of peer-to-peer IP traffic increases and telcos look for ways to ensure services quality. Yet, how deeply are packets inspected, and could DPI capabilities be used to invade user privacy? Net neutrality proponents also are wary.
Who's using it: Several telcos already use DPI in various capacities, though they haven't promoted it. Vendors of DPI technology include Allot Communications, Sandvine, Ellacoya, Continuous Computing, Cloudshield and several others.
