Integra soups up Western U.S. 100G fiber reach, adds Salt Lake City to Sacramento route
Integra is giving its wholesale and business service customers on the West Coast another connectivity option by enabling a long-haul fiber network route providing a connection between Salt Lake City to Sacramento.
Leveraging its growing 100G long-haul backbone network, the new 865-mile network route will provide low-latency transport to its metro network in those cities with additional connections to Reno and the San Francisco Bay Area.
This extension will make Integra more competitive with area incumbents such as CenturyLink (NYSE: CTL) and AT&T (NYSE: T) by providing a growing host of data centers, enterprises and wholesale partners with another alternative partner. Two other potential benefits of the route are that it provides enhanced network diversity and a host of business continuity solutions.
The Salt Lake City to Sacramento route may be its latest strategic investment, but it won't be its last. Integra said it is the "first of many strategic investments in network expansion Integra plans for 2014."
Western network expansion has been a continual theme for Integra.
Besides enhancing its long-haul network routes, the service provider has been connecting its fiber to more data centers in both California's Bay Area and Phoenix, Ariz. As of last September, Integra connected its fiber network into a total of 62 data centers. At that time, Integra said it planned to add four new data center connections in the Bay Area, bringing it to a total of 10, while adding seven new locations, including four in Phoenix.
These routes could also give it another weapon as it pursues business as a Qualified Vendor of voice and data services for California's CALNET 3 contract.
