iRis, NGN Interconnect to provide 100G connectivity between Tennessee, North Georgia

iRis Networks and NGN have established a new fiber Ethernet interconnection agreement that will enhance the reach of their networks while broadening broadband availability between Nashville, Knoxville and Cleveland, Tenn., and Atlanta and North Georgia.

Through this interconnection agreement, the two providers will be able to provide businesses with access to speeds from as low as 1 Mbps with the opportunity to scale up to 100G.

One of the interesting side effects is that the local communities iRis and NGN will serve will become more attractive. What's more, national wireline and wireless providers will be able to access to the networks to deliver services to rural business customers or for wireless backhaul.

Both companies come to the table with sizeable network assets.

NGN's middle mile and local distribution network routes connect 17 counties in North Georgia. The iRis network reaches over 100 communities in Tennessee, Kentucky and Alabama, as well as regional carrier hotel locations in Nashville, Atlanta, Ashburn, Va., and Chicago.

iRis and NGN have been an active participant in helping service providers access rural markets.

In March, iRis established an agreement with Ritter Communications to bring fiber and Ethernet services to more than 100 rural markets in Arkansas, Alabama, Kentucky, Oklahoma and Tennessee.

NGN recently began upgrading Internet connections to seven libraries that were on a 6 Mbps connection to a 100 Mbps symmetrical Internet connection within the Northeast Georgia Regional Library system.
