Hardware Corner: JDSU experiences supply shortage

JDS Uniphase recently became the second optical components company to say that demand for some products is out-pacing its supply. Fellow components vendor Bookham made a similar statement earlier this summer, according to Light Reading. JDSU cited reconfigurable add/drop multiplexers and tunable lasers as market segments where demand has been stronger than supply.

In a difficult economy, vendors increasingly have to be careful about their manufacturing costs and target product supply capacities, so they don't end up with surplus inventory. The flip-side is that when products are scarce, carriers customers get upset, and vendors may need to boost manufacturing costs in future quarters. It is not clear that JDSU will be affected in that way, but Bookham already has boosted capital spending for the rest of this year.
